Meet Selena Soo!
Coby Kozlowski- a professional life coach, inspirational speaker, yoga and dance teacher, expressive arts therapist, and expert in transformative leadership. Since we have been working together she was on the cover of YOGA magazine, and had her TED talk. Coby really understands the value of artful images- and we get to shoot roughly 2 x year! These few pics are from our latest shoot in Brooklyn.
My stunning client Kimberly Daniels is a self-proclaimed reggae head, world traveler, photographer, fashionista and yogi who strives to inspire women to live unapologetically, indulge in radical self-care, and unleash your inner *DIVA. She is building a Holistic Wellness and Lifestyle Coaching practice. She works with women 1:1 who are willing to DIG DEEP in order to make major lifestyle changes in a way that shifts their entire lives, leading them to feel more confident, fulfilled and happy.
There is many facets to Kimberly and her work, some words we put down on paper before her shoot were female empowerment, sass and glow, unapologetic, productive, healthy, sexy, light, smart, philanthropic, confident, fashionable, content, peaceful, dynamic, complicated, multidimensional, zen. I think we were pretty successful in creating a variety of fantastic images.

If I could give one piece of advice to someone who is truly dedicated to making their mission a huge success- I would say- go and meet your fellow entrepreneurs, in real life, in person. Live events are really good for that.
I recently had this awesome opportunity to document THRIVE NYC, a conference connecting thousands of women entrepreneurs from all over the world. Thrive is a beautiful ‘child’ of Wendy Timmons. Wendy is a true visionary, with a goal to empower 24 million #sheroes to create their SUPER Ever After and THRIVE in their lives and businesses. She uses that vision to drive success coaching practice, one with international clientele focused on soulful businesses. Her GIRLPOWER mission began 17 years ago building socially impactful businesses all over the United States.
NYC Thrive featured world famous speakers, such as Kimra Luna, Kat Loterzo, Kate Butler, Belinda Ginter, Page Filliater, Steena Brown, Koman Minhas and Erin Bagwell, and many, many others.
Missed Thrive NYC? No worries- check out another one coming up in a couple of weeks in San Francisco: http://www.thriveinsf.com
Body Image Insecurities and Photography. As a Personal Branding Photographer I always experience a bit of a rocky start in the Spring (after that looong winter hibernation), when the mantra of most (potential) clients is ‘I want a shoot so bad, but I am not ready! Need to get into shape. Lose 10 pounds. My eczema is driving me crazy. My arms are flab’. Seriously ladies (do men have those issues?), striving for ‘perfection’ is such BS., and as Liz Gilbert put it- ‘perfection is fear disguised’. Here’s a few tips on how to approach a potential photo-opp, feeling really freaking fabulous about your physique:
-keep calm & trust the magic powers of your photographer- most of us (professional ones with extensive experience photographing women, that is) will know exactly how to find the most flattering light, angles & poses to reveal your best features (and disguise something you wouldn’t want to show). We will give you lots of direction, and make you feel fabulous. Not only you’ll get awesome photos, you will feel empowered and somewhat transformed after a successful session. If something needs to be smoothed out, tucked, blurred.. we have our secret tools, so no worries (yay for photoshop!).
- get professionally pampered beforehand. That can include hair cut/ color, facial (a week or so pre- shoot), and definitely a *professional* makeup and hairstyling on the day of. This is super important, and do not skip it- even if you profess to be ‘super natural/ never were makeup’. Stylists will make your face ‘photo ready’, with high quality products and knowledge how things look on camera versus through the naked eye.
Also, manicure (pedicure) is a must!
- hit up your fairy godmother, a.k.a. 'Rent the Runway’ or other rental house for your wardrobe needs, if your next excuse is ‘nothing to wear! no time to shop!’. From sparkly dresses, and furry vests to chunky necklaces, they have it all! It’s like your personal adult dress-up extravaganza, what's not to love about it?!
- take care of yourself. If you are like me, who generally leads a healthy lifestyle, you might do a juicing cleanse/ a mini detox for a few days in the week leading to your time on camera. It will make your skin glow, give you tons of energy and generally make you feel lighter. Do not indulge in salty food (bye- bye anchovy /olive pizza) or booze in the few days prior to your shoot. Instead, drink lots of water, to flush out toxins, and hydrate your skin! Do not exercise too hard on the day of the shoot- you don’t want to look exhausted.
Most of all, bring your true, confident self. You are ‘Perfect' EXACTLY THE WAY YOU ARE and good photography will reveal it, I promise!
Feel free to add to the list above! Any other tips? Do YOU feel ready for a shoot?
Do you know the difference? It’s funny because as a Personal Branding Photographer I often get inquiries from entrepreneur women in need of ‘some headshots’. I often wonder if it is just a matter of linguistics, or people really don’t know how portraits and headshots are different from one another. Sure, they both are important visual communication tools, and yes, a headshot *is* a portrait, since it is a representation of a person. Headshot is also (boring?), formulaic (head & shoulders/ horizontal crop), clean and realistic, and most likely has a ‘pleasant’ expression, and it *can* exude personality. It is just a formal representation of an individual in a ‘professional’ looking setting. I would even risk saying that it is only 2 levels up from a passport photo.
Portrait on the other hand can be a piece of art. It is created with an artistic license and inspiration (fun! interesting! unique! memorable!). It shows a variety of expressions as well as moods, various settings, body language galore, costumes and all kinds of attire, but most of all IT CAN TELL THE STORY of a person, and it hopefully EXUDES EMOTIONS IN YOUR IDEAL CLIENT, and that is a goal of well done branding, is it not?
Let’s leave headshots for corporate folks and insurance agents (and actors). As self employed entrepreneurs, let’s enjoy the fun and freedom to be represented in unique, free spirited, artistic ways that are brilliantly weaved into your personal story, (and your branding). I want to run in the meadows, play with sun rays, and capture you in a multitude of fabulous scenarios, sky is the limit!
Imagine spending an entire day immersed in the inspiring energy of like-minded boss babes (or boss babes-to-be) with a huge mission and vision for the world. That's exactly what Business Magic LIVE in NYC on 3/6 was! I was honored to document a room full of wicked-cool women growing their heart centered businesses, just like I. We spent the whole day jamming on all things authenticity and how to create a badass brand, business or blog without losing one's magic. And we had a chance to mastermind, workshop and soak up insider success secrets from industry superstars, as well!
Amazing speakers included: Kimra Luna, Amanda Frances, Rachel Tenenbaum/ The Self Help Socialite, Lisa Steadman, Gala Darling, Alyson Charles, Donna D'Cruz, Biet Simkin, Kamal Ravikant, Rebekah Borucki, and others.

So, you are finally ready to throw some magic dust onto your website, a.k.a you have booked the personal branding photo shoot with a kick ass photographer whose style you absolutely adore! I imagine that in anticipation for the shoot you’d go clothes shopping- whoo-hoo! As certain fabrics, colors and cuts photograph better than others, and often what looks great in real life doesn’t always translate in photos- you’ll do some research, get some advice from your photographer, or even hire a stylist. You’ll get a blow dry to tame your tresses on the day of the shoot, won’t you? Then, during your session- you will trust your photographer- even if they tell you to push your chin forward although that might seem weird, or, in order to create a dynamic and fun capture, you'll dance & spin, while laughing uncontrollably. Right?
But when it comes to a professional makeup, that’s often when the questions pile up. ‘Can't I just do my own makeup? I do it every day,’ or ‘Is this really necessary? I don’t ever wear makeup’ or ‘does it really make a difference?’.
Ask yourself, you are making such a significant investment of time and money into your high quality images - why would you leave your face - that which makes you, YOU - to chance?
As a photographer who has been capturing people for nearly 15 years, I can assure you that there’s an enormous difference between professionally done makeup (yay), a DIY job (meh), and no makeup at all (boo).
Searching for truth, I asked two professional makeup artists to chime in on the subject.
According to Laura Nadeau, a professional beauty coach & makeup artist (http://www.loandco.com ): ' Hiring a pro to work on your face is not about changing how you look - unless you’re a Kardashian. It’s about getting your face to look as it does in real life while being flattened and frozen by a photograph. The makeup artist is using light and shadows on your face to add dimension and definition. Not to mention providing the perfect photo-finish that will render your complexion flawless, and conceal any of the tiny flaws you might worry about. The MUA will work to enhance your most attractive features - accentuate your high cheek bones, add contouring to your eyes, or work with false eyelashes (which really open and bring out the beauty of your eyes).’
According to Sara Drury, a makeup artist and an educator (https://www.instagram.com/saradrurylocallooks), 'make-up for photography is different than the one you’d wear on a date. A professional will know exactly what to use so you look radiant and not washed out or overly made up. Trust that they know what they are doing. Makeup for photos or video is not the same as everyday makeup'.
Sara also adds another reason to hire a pro- ‘ It’s relaxing and empowering: we want to look beautiful and more importantly FEEL good about ourselves, and make-up can help with that. It takes away stress.
Having photos taken can be a little stressful. What should you wear? Do I need to bring props? Is there a theme? At least if someone is helping you get ready, that's one thing YOU don't have to worry about getting right.’
Laura notes: 'There are few things that freak women out more than having their photo taken. I’ve witnessed women that recently gave birth, stress out about a photo session! We place more importance on how we look in a photo than how we look in person. Just watch people check their selfies…'
Also, ladies that insist on doing their own makeup - here’s food for thought from Sara regarding the quality of your make up: 'Most makeup artists invest a lot of time and money into their makeup kits. You get the benefit of having very high quality products that look amazing on camera.’
She also adds: 'Having professionally done makeup makes you look more polished. If you are getting photos done for your business keep in mind that this is how you are presenting yourself to the world. With social media, hundreds or even thousands of people could be seeing your photos. In fact according to this article from Forbes: (http://www.forbes.com/sites/tykiisel/2013/03/20/you-are-judged-by-your-appearance/#17a30a0830f0) women who wear makeup are not only considered more trustworthy, but they also earn 30% more money! Now if that doesn't convince you I don't know what will.'
Sara offers these additional helpful tips on how to go about your session:
1. Get a recommendation from someone you know and trust (a photographer perhaps).
2. If there's a particular product you love or always wear, bring it. Or if you just cannot see yourself in red lipstick tell the makeup artist. They want you to look like you, and they want you to be happy with the result. Be as specific as you can on what it is you want - and they will be able to fulfill your vision - a natural look, a glam look, a smoky eye, glossy nude lips, red lips, dewy skin, or maybe a winged liner?
So what about these ladies who never wear make up, and want to look super natural? As a photographer, the first thing I tell makeup shy clients is that the camera never captures quite as much vibrancy as is visible by the naked eye. Even if you want a subtle makeup look in your photos, you still need to really exaggerate the makeup you’re applying, because it will not show up as strong through the lens. Light bouncing off of your face will change the way the makeup looks, and makes it look less dramatic in the photo than it really is. An experienced artist will know exactly what products to use and how to apply them if you want to look like you have no makeup on (yes, that is a style). That is why it is imperative to find a seasoned pro.
When it comes to working with professional talent, another really nice bonus is that you can consult them beforehand on how to prepare your skin (wax your eyebrows, exfoliate your skin, etc.), and make it look its best before the shoot. Yay!
Are you convinced to hire a professional makeup artist next time you book a portrait session? I can’t wait to hear your feedback. And don’t forget - the real beauty lies within. <3

Immediately upon meeting Paula I was struck by her beauty and her kindness. She is a lifestyle, beauty and confidence coach, transplanted from Buenos Aires, Argentina. She helps her clients achieve not only glowing skin, but also build confidence, bring balance and focus into their lives. Paula has such striking presence & charisma, she also has a fabulous fashion style, that made our shoot so much fun! Her husband/ business partner Rob joined our shoot a bit later, and I got to capture the divine synergy and love between them.
I have photographed Gry for about 4 years now, and watched her business grow like crazy! This dynamic, powerful & intelligent woman helps online business entrepreneurs achieve their wildest business dreams & goals. Her presence and personality is incredibly energizing & inspiring. Aside from her natural stunning Scandinavian beauty, she's got a great sense of style- so each shoot is a blast! Check out Gry's site: http://www.grysinding.com
Yoga educator. A Leader for Transformation. A Story Teller. Kripalu Faculty. Yoga Journal cover model. A surfer. A skateboarder! So many more things, but amongst all she's such an amazing & inspirational human being!
I had an amazing opportunity to photograph beautiful Coby not once, but twice recently! We captured some 'yoga stuff' in upstate New York earlier this Spring, and had more of a lifestyle shoot in Berkshires, in the midst of autumn. I am proud to say that her awesome website consist of mostly photos from our shoot(s).

We shot in her (old!) NYC neighborhood of West Village.
I can't wait when we do another shoot- this time in sunny California, where Melissa has relocated.

I am back from San Francisco, and the Marin county, where I got to capture five incredible, successful & inspirational and vibrant Women Entrepreneurs.
Those Personal Branding Photoshoots were a part of a program Hilary Andersen ( a web designer extraordinaire/ business coach guru) and I put together earlier this fall. The program was called "Total Business Makeover: Get Branded, Get Clients, Get Seen"- where every participant gets a completely personalized photo shoot with me, and Hilary work with them on their new online presence using these personalized branding images, as well as on their business strategy. Each model was able to show of a few different looks, and we traveled to a number of hand picked locations all and around the city. Rodeo beach, Crissy Field, Palace of fine Arts, De Young Museum, oh San Francisco, you are stunning, and I can't wait to return.
Tracy (www.tracycampoli.com) is a total body transformation guru! This dynamic and inspirational coach truly lives her philosophy. I love following her on Facebook, and watching her 'in a nutshell' mini workout videos, and her healthy & delicious food ideas! Not to mention her getaway pics from exotic places! Tracy also has an impeccable fashion sense, and she's such a New York City girl. Tracy's Personal Branding Photoshoot shoot earlier this summer was amazing. Huge thank you to our amazing stylist Kavita Kaul.
The model of my latest NYC shoot- Sherie is developing her business as a coach for entrepreneurial women who desire to quit their day jobs, and devote themselves into running their own ventures. She gives them tools on how to maintain balance between work and life, while achieving profits. One of the goals for the images was to convey the idea of 'luxury' as in lifestyle. We started at W Union Square, strolled around West Village & Meatpacking . Sherie was fantastic!
Meet my beautiful friend Danielle Diamond! I first met Danielle at a Garden State Yoga (currently Powerflow) class she was teaching. She had a reputation to be super fun, and a very tough teacher. She kicked our butts so badly in the class those days, and it felt awesome.
Nowadays Danielle is a mind/ body wellness expert . She educates her clients about yoga, meditation, nutrition, confidence, and bliss within, so they can make their health & happiness non- negotiable.
Danielle also founded XenStrenght, a sweaty, cardio infused yoga flow with weights.
Danielle is an amazing person, and such inspiration to everyone that meets her.
Our latest shoot was in Brooklyn's DUMBO. Its gritty, industrial chic streets, setting sun, and wall art was such a fun backdrop for the shoot! And we even got free ice -cream from the nice ice cream truck gentleman.
